Lying here in my sweat-soaked bed I can’t help but feel utterly alone. Only Dana could keep the nightmares at bay. I roll over and feel her side of the bed, it’s cold and empty. Just like every night, I have to remind myself she isn’t here. I hear the tiny sobs coming from the room next to mine and get up. Poor Nathan hasn’t taken any of this well.
“Hey little man, what’s up?” I ask him as I enter his room.
“Daddy, my sleeping scary,” he sniffles.
“Come here,” I say, pulling him to me as I climb on the bed. “Did you have a bad dream?”
He nods his head and snuggles into me. “I want Mummy,” he mumbles into my chest.
“Me too,” I reply, stroking his soft hair as I try to soothe him.
“When Mummy get back?” It’s the same question he asks me every night.
“Go back to sleep.” The same answer I give him every night.
I wake up when someone starts jumping up and down on my bladder. I open my eyes to see the most beautiful little boy staring back at me.
“Wakey, wakey.” He grins.
“I will if you stop bouncing on me,” I chuckle.
“Unkey Jays says my jump on you, you get up,” he garbles.
“I’m getting up, but you need to get off me or I can’t,” I say as he giggles and continues jumping. “Well if you’re not going to get off me, then I’ll have to do this!” I shout playfully, as I lift him off me, place him on the bed, and start to tickle him.
“Daddy, stop,” he laughs.
“Can you tell Uncle James that I’m up and would really like a coffee please?” I ask him.
He nods and runs off down the hall shouting, “Daddy want toffee!”
It’s amazing how much he makes me smile. I just wish his mom was here to see these precious moments. I take a quick shower and get myself dressed, ready to start a new day. I start to make my way downstairs to the kitchen, as Richard exits his room.
“Did you get the morning wakeup call too?” he asks.
“Yeah, I did,” I reply with a chuckle.
In the kitchen we find Nathan at the table eating breakfast, James cooking bacon, and Andrew making coffee. We all settle around the table and begin our morning ritual. Richard has allowed us all to stay here in his house as both of our apartments have been demolished. I’m having my new house renovated and refurnished and it should be ready in time for Christmas. I glance over at the Christmas tree we reluctantly put up for Nathan’s benefit. Some Christmas this will be. Living in a house on my own when it was meant to be for our family. It should be filled by Dana, Nathan, the twins, and I. I blink back tears as they threaten to fall, I can’t fall apart before the day has even begun.
“What are your plans for today?” Drew asks.
“I’m going to head to the cemetery and lay some fresh flowers, then I have a telephone meeting with Father Greggs about a project he’s starting in the Bronx,” I reply and Drew nods.
“Say hi for me at the cemetery, and let her know I’ll visit her soon,” James requests.
“I will. Okay I’m off, I’ll see you all later,” I say to the men at the table, who all reply their goodbyes. “Be good for Uncle James and I’ll take you to see the new house later, okay?” I say to Nathan, kissing his head before I leave.
“Yes, Daddy.” He smiles and it warms my heart.
I arrive at the cemetery twenty minutes later. I stopped off at the florist and picked up the bouquet I ordered for today. I weave in and out of the headstones until I see hers. Instantly the guilt hits me. She shouldn’t be here—this is all my fault. I walk tentatively towards her headstone with my head lowered, and get to work on tidying up her grave. When I’m done, I place the new flowers in the vase and sit down next to her headstone and let out a long sigh.
“Hey,” I say to the air. “I know I haven’t been to see you for the last couple of days, things have been really hectic. Nathan is talking so much now and he’s trying really hard to form sentences. He really misses you.” I let out another long sigh. “I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks since we buried you. Time just seems to be standing still for all of us at the moment. Christmas is next week and Nathan is so excited, but the rest of us can’t seem to get into the holiday spirit.” I let my mind wander for a while as the bitter cold wind bites at my skin. “I’m so sorry,” I finally announce. “You wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me. I should have protected you better.”
