Book Synopsis

Gunnar is one fight away from cruiserweight champion, and one flight of stairs away from true love.

When Gunnar left his ex, the current cruiserweight champion, two years earlier and moved back to his hometown, he knew he was passing up his chance to win the world. The last thing he wants is to meet his ex in the ring while the world dubs it a grudge match. For the most part, he’s content with traveling. Being known as the casino champ isn’t a bad gig. He doesn’t realize he’s missing anything. That is, until Gunnar comes to a stranger’s rescue in the rain.

Liam isn’t a stranger at all. Not only has he been living upstairs from Gunnar for the past two years, they went to high school together. Since Liam’s changed a lot in the past few years, he doesn’t hold it against Gunnar for not recognizing him.

Gunnar scratched his number out on a scrap of paper sitting on his end table. “Here. You’ll need this.”
Liam took it, but not without question. “I will?”
Gunnar smirked. “Yeah. You definitely will.” No one in their right mind could miss the sexual promise dripping from Gunnar’s every word.
Stuffing the paper in the front pocket of his jeans, Liam flashed an innocent smile. “You’re right. I’m always doing stupid shit like I did yesterday. It might not be a bad idea to have someone close by I can count on. I’d hate for Kaz to have to drive all the way in from Miami just to bring my keys again. Luckily, he was halfway between there and here yesterday, shopping.” He moved back toward the door. Gunnar watched it happen. His confusion made him slow to react. Liam baffled the hell out of Gunnar.
He chose a more direct approach since hinting obviously wasn’t working. “Of course, I’m here if you need a dry place again, but I’m even better at giving a wet place. I’d love for you to use my number for other reasons as well. Preferably for naughty pics. Yeah, I wouldn’t turn those down.”
“Oh,” Liam said, smiling. “I love those memes people post on Facebook. I’ll see if I can find something good for you.”
This was ridiculous. He had to know if Liam was fucking with him or genuinely uninterested. Gunnar didn’t think he was conceited or anything. Maybe he was. A little. Fuck, he worked hard on his body and tried to always be confident. People liked confident men, right? Something seemed wrong about Liam’s reaction to Gunnar’s every attempt at flirting with him. He focused on the vent in the ceiling above Liam’s head.
“Damn. What’s up with that vent? I keep opening it, and it keeps closing itself somehow.” Without giving Liam time to answer or figure out what he was talking about, Gunnar crowded Liam’s space, reaching above the other man’s head. He didn’t stop until barely an inch separated them, leaving Liam nowhere to go. Attempting to make his story look good, Gunnar toyed with the vent, opening it all the way and thanking God for the low ceilings in his apartment. He’d have to fix the vent later or it would be hotter than hell in his bedroom, but it was worth it if he could force Liam’s hand.
Without moving away, Gunnar glanced down. Liam was craning his neck in an obvious attempt at inspecting the problem. His expression hadn’t changed in the least. But goddamn, his blue eyes were even more amazing up close. They were an odd shade of smoky blue.
“Something probably needs to be tightened.” Liam’s hands came to rest on Gunnar’s sides, as if the man had braced himself to see around Gunnar’s large frame and get at the problem. Nothing separated them. It was skin-on-skin, and Gunnar went hard at the sensation. He couldn’t stop staring at Liam’s face. Liam finally focused on Gunnar. The corners of his mouth lifted in a sweet smile before falling. Liam shrugged.
“Really. I’m just talking out of my ass. I know nothing about heat and air ventilation.”
Gunnar tried clinging to a brain cell. It didn’t happen. The words fell from his lips without his permission.
“Wow. You really are clueless, aren’t you?”
Liam opened his mouth. Gunnar could see him gearing up to argue. Without giving Liam a chance, Gunnar lowered his head and covered Liam’s mouth with his. He’d meant to make a point. That was all. In all honesty, he expected Liam to shove him away or knee him in the balls. Instead, Liam’s tongue touched his. Gunnar’s mind went blank. He moved an inch closer, intent on deepening their kiss. Liam snagged the back of Gunnar’s hair, beating him to the punch. Gunnar’s bottom lip stung as Liam’s teeth sank into it. He wanted the moment to last forever. The instant that thought hit, Gunnar pulled away. He already knew what his life lacked. The last thing Gunnar needed was another fantasy he couldn’t keep.
Liam didn’t miss a beat. “As much as I want to tell you how it isn’t nice to call someone clueless, I’m too curious to know why you’d say that.”
The confusion written on Liam’s face made Gunnar want to growl. Even now, after that hot-as-hell kiss, Liam didn’t seem to realize how he affected Gunnar. Gunnar pried Liam’s fingers from his hair before dragging Liam’s hand down his body, until Liam’s fingers shaped Gunnar’s erection.
“Because you do this to me, and you don’t even know it.”

Excerpt:

We got out of the car and walked up to the house. Di was more than a friend to me, she was a sister. She understood me and supported like only a sister could. I loved her very much.
We walked into the front door. The moment the door closed behind Di, my mom yelled, “Tatum, come here. Right now.”
I turned back to Di and whispered, “And so it begins.”
Di stood frozen with bulging eyes. I whipped around and a hand smacked me across the face. I went flying into the coffee table.
“Oh my god, Tate.” Di dropped to the floor behind me.
I took my hand to my forehead and rubbed the dent where my head had collided with the table, then examined my fingertips for blood. They were clear.
“What the hell is this?” my mom yelled.
I turned back to her and she flashed the pee stick. How did she get that? I put that in my nightstand. Ugh, my cheek burned.
“Cindy, what the hell is going on?” Dad came running up from the basement. “What fell?”
Toni stood in the hallway crying. “Daddy, Mommy knocked Tatey down. Hewp her.”
Di grabbed under my armpits and pulled me upright.
My mom became Mr. Hyde. Her pupils were tiny and her eyebrows arched. “I found this pregnancy test in the bathroom trash. You’re pregnant?”
Dad turned the corner into the living room and noticed Di helping me to my feet and ran over to grab me. “What the hell, Cindy. Did you knock her down?”
My mom shoved the pregnancy stick in his face.
He took it. “Tate, is this yours?” He looked at me, his faced drained of blood.
“Dad, please listen. It is—” I sat down on the couch. My head hurt.
Dad shot a dirty look at my mom. “We can be pissed, but don’t you lay a hand on my daughter again.”
Di hid in the front corner by the door, whispering on her mobile. I couldn’t hear who she was talking to.
Poor Toni sat in the doorway crying.
“Tone, come here. I’m okay,” I waved for her to come to me.
She ran and sat next to me. I patted her back. Gizmo barked in the backyard and then ran through the doggie door flap. He joined Toni.

Excerpt

“Will you just leave already?” I demand, swiping at my tears and feel the welcomed anger eclipse the pain of hurt.
Orion looks at me in surprise for a moment then his eyes darken, determination setting in, there is no other way to describe it. He nods once then climbs over the bed and backs me against the wall, crowding me in.
“Now you listen, Tiger, I thought I had made myself abundantly clear, and I don’t wish for you to misunderstand again.” Orion takes a deep breath as I hardly dare to breathe. “I have loved you almost since that first look where you sized me up, your amazing mind deciding whether or not to rabbit. I have loved you almost from the moment you looked at me with those big, beautiful eyes, confused as I called you beautiful.” His finger gently caresses my cheek and jawbone. Feeling slightly light headed from lack of oxygen, I suck in a deep breath, letting it out shakily as I see the emotion he talks of in his eyes.
“I have loved you from the moment you cared for Lothar, a male you didn’t know, as sweetly as if he were your lover. You are beautiful, honest, and have the tenderest heart of anyone I know. I want to be around you and with you more than anyone else in my life.” Orion pauses, and after a deep breath, he cups my face in his big hands and breathes, “I love you, Mallory, please believe me.”
He wipes the tears that are still falling from my cheeks with his thumbs, looking intently at me as I sputter, “But . . . but there is nothing here for you.”
He frowns for a second then seems to understand what I am saying. “That’s why you are hurting.” He pulls me into his arms, holding me close, and it feels like he is putting me back together, one piece at a time.
His expression is pained when he pulls back. “There is nothing for me to do here, for the moment, that’s what I meant. I just want you safe, I don’t know how I could live if something happened to you.”
Relief so great spreads through me making my body tingle, and I slump a little realizing that what I heard was not at all what he meant, and after the relief comes the familiar love that I have been pushing back.
“I love you too, Orion. Though it scares me,” I whisper.
Orion tenses then forces my chin up to look at him. “I would never leave you willingly, never. I want all of you, always.”

About Pamela Binnings Ewen:

After practicing law for many years in Houston, Texas, Pamela Binnings Ewen exchanged her partnership in the law firm of BakerBotts, L.L.P for writing. She lives near New Orleans, Louisiana. In September, 2013, Ewen’s novel, An Accidental Life, will be released by B&H Publishing Group. In addition, in September 2013, an updated, second edition of Ewen’s best-selling non-fiction book, Faith on Trial, will be released, including a new ‘User’s Guide’.

In addition to the new releases, Pamela is the author of four novels from B&H Publishing Group, including Secret of the Shroud, The Moon in the Mango Tree (a 2009 Christy Award Finalist), Dancing on Glass (a 2012 Christy Award Finalist, and winner of a Single Titles Reviewers’ Choice Award), and Chasing the Wind ( a Romantic Times ‘Top Pick’). The Moon in the Mango Tree was recently honored as winner of the 2012 Eudora Welty Memorial Award given by the National League of American Pen Women.

Pamela’s fiction writing grows out of her faith journey, which resulted in Faith on Trial in 1999. Faith on Trial , along with Lee Strobel’s A Case for Christ, was chosen as a text for a course on law and religion at Yale Law School in 2000. Pamela is also featured in the film Jesus: Fact or Fiction, produced by Campus Crusade for Christ. An updated second edition of Faith on Trial (September, 2013) includes a new ‘User’s Guide’.

Pamela is the latest writer to emerge from a Louisiana family recognized for its statistically improbable number of successful authors. A cousin, James Lee Burke, who won the Edgar Award, wrote about the common ancestral grandfathers in his Civil War novel White Dove At Morning.

Among other writers in the family are Andre Dubus (Best Picture Oscar nomination for The Bedroom; his son, Andre Dubus III, author of The House of Sand and Fog, a Best Picture Oscar nomination and an Oprah pick; Elizabeth Nell Dubus (the Cajun trilogy); and Alafair Burke, just starting out with the well-received Samantha Kincaid mystery series.

I don’t know if he hit the emergency brake or I did, but the elevator jolted and we weren’t going anywhere. We were frozen in this place. A place where the past was forgotten and we slipped back into the warm deliciousness of memories.

My fingers slipped through his hair and I pulled him close, quivering from head to toe when I felt the solid wall of muscle pressed against me. His hands took possession of me, sweeping over my hips, gliding over the swell of my breasts and before he even got to my nipples that were swollen and aching for him, I was lost and found, all at the same time.

My mind was filled with two words. Don’t stop.
