Not all things that glitter are made of gold.
My name is Paul Kian McKinnon. I grew up with upper class, wealthy parents who had successful jobs, the best education money could buy, friends in all the most popular circles, and of course ideal grades. My good fortune spilled over into my adult life. To most people my life is what you would call privileged. At first glance you would think I have everything together, healthy bank account, beautiful house, good job, and great friends. Everything is perfect, until… The door to the outside world closes.
At home everything falls apart. In this place, I am my most vulnerable. Every night I try silence my inner demons in a sea of sleeping pills and alcohol, but sometimes that isn’t enough. Sometimes it gets to be too much and I need to do more than simply just dull the anxiety, pain, and the all-encompassing numbness. Yes, I know it’s not healthy, but it’s all I have… Well that and my brothers, the Misfits as we are called.
We were all brought together thanks to the kindness of Jethro-Elijah Shepard. Through his compassionate heart and stern beliefs, we’ve grown up together into strong, loyal, friends. We’ve celebrated each other’s wins, as well as comforting each other in our loses. Those men have been more of a family to me than my own flesh and blood, and yet I still can’t bring myself to share the darkest parts of me. They won’t understand because they see me just as the rest of the world does… Perfect.
What would happen if I dropped the mask and let it splinter like the pieces of my broken soul?
Would they save me?
The better question is… Do I want to save myself, or do I just want to fade away into the abyss of pain and suffering?
Am I ready to peel away the beautiful covering and let them look at the ugliness underneath?
In order to find out you’ll have to read my story, and trust me when I say… it won’t be for the faint of heart.
(This is the Second book in the Brotherhood of Misfits series. It can be a stand alone BUT to full get to know the characters it is best to read Book One.)

★.•**•★ Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ Hidden Chamber of Death by Hawk MacKinney ★•**•.★

Hidden Chamber of Death
by Hawk MacKinney
Series: Moccasin Hollow Mystery, #1
Genre: Mystery/Suspense
Publisher: Sage Words Publishers Group
Release Date: January 15, 2016

Hidden Chamber of Death is a compelling tale of intrigue, murder, deception and suspense that leads retired Navy SEAL/part-time private investigator Craige Ingram in search of the connection between seemingly random murders and a banking conspiracy.  Working with the local homicide investigator, who just happens to be a former Navy buddy, Craige Ingram's attempts to protect a lonely widow and solve the case before another person dies are only thwarted by a psychotic killer whose motivation is based on pure depraved pleasure.  In this first book of the MOCCASIN HOLLOW MYSTERY SERIES, the instincts and skills Ingram and his buddy acquired as Navy SEALS are tested to their limits.

Death is seldom dignified, even less so if it’s felony murder. No-such-thing-as-exSEAL private investigator Craige Ingram never forgot how personal death could get. This time it blind-sided a lot of people—including him.

Except for the Silver Bluff Museum of Southron Art annual charity event, prominent CEO Llewyn Royce Sedgewicke and PI Craige Howelle Graeme Roynane Ingram didn’t move in the same social circles. Chances were slim to none that Royce Sedgewicke would’ve ever been invited to the sprawling riverfront lands that had once been Grannie Ingram’s dogtrot Moccasin Hollow.

Unlike his collection of mounted big game trophies, portly Royce Sedgewicke’s food-bespattered tuxedoed carcass stretched like public road kill amid the crash and smash of food, china, crystal and splayed floral pieces, and very dead. Last-breath gurgles around his gagging tongue; smart phones madly clicked, flooding social media before the emergency ambulance arrived. The headlines made big local news. Online photos of his swollen tongue and overstuffed derrière made a bigger hit of his grand departure, squandering what little decorum he ever had. That mess was bad enough, but he left a bigger one behind.

The circle cinched a lot less social and way more snug when the head of Buckingham Parish Metro Law Enforcement, Investigative Support Team Graysen MacGerald paid an off-the-record visit to his grown-up-together SEAL Commanding Officer Craige `Peadinger’ Ingram. The death certificate said heart attack—it wasn’t.

book blurb

“Kept” is a (crime mystery) desert neo-noir about George and Connor, two young gay men who get mixed up in a deadly Palm Springs real estate scam and fight to survive in a twisted world of desire, double-cross and deception.

Palm Springs: Jorge Gomez leaves his poor family behind and remakes himself as ambitious George Gomes.

Soon young gay George is picked up by Connor Hurst, who takes him to an empty mansion for a night of lust. Connor convinces George to work alongside him in a scam targeting gullible retirees with classic desert homes.

George appears to be on a strange path to the American Dream, until his help covering up a violent death propels him toward bigger risks—perhaps even murder, one that seems justified, one promising a sizable payday.

George doesn't know his role is to take the fall. Yet he isn’t as stupid as everyone thinks. Left alone, literally hanging on a wire with a corpse, George must fight enemies real and imagined if he has any hope of finding his dream—or even staying alive long enough to enjoy it.

excerpt

Pilar Greco’s folks never trusted Sy.
Parents sometimes came in dreams like messengers, gods of the old world, those Aztec gods—warriors, yes, but also the odd cannibal and baby killer. Which made her shudder.
Pilar Greco’s father could get away with wearing that kind of Mexican native monumental headdress—he had the features for it, even if he wasn’t wearing anything other than a simple sensible suburban shirt and shorts in her dream. She, in turn, took after her mother—small, finely featured, but with the very same jet-black hair, now accentuated a tiny bit with each salon visit.
In her dream, they sat around the pool in the backyard of their Scottsdale home. Mr. Galindez never understood why his Pilar had married an Italian, a Jew Italian, but that was the least of his worries. He was wary of Sy Greco even as he appreciated his better qualities. It was in the eyes; it was always in the eyes.
“You just have to look, look hard, mijaIn the eyes.
Such was the memory that surfaced when the nosy Desert Sunreporter Nancy Argento called the office. Pilar didn’t usually answer the phone; she was distracted after nibbling on a Godiva someone left at reception. Worrying it might discolor her teeth, and what could be more disgusting than little brown bits stuck in dental work?
She was distracted, so she answered the call, and it was this Nancy. Told an impossible tale of deceit by a crazy old bag woman; she must be a stupid writer to believe such a thing. From someone who lived under a bridge!
This reporter Nancy wanted to talk to Sy; he was even there, present in the office. But Pilar was the one who did the talking for them. Sy didn’t know when to shut up; he always gave out just a shred more information than he had to. Information that could and would come back and bite them both in the ass.
Pilar knew this Nancy was fishing, but there wasn’t going to be anything ever caught on that line. Greco & Greco invested in classic mid-century homes; what was strange about that? Everyone with a little bit of cash was doing the same thing—the new century’s version of a baby boomer gold mine.
So there was no excuse when she got a little flustered, and who could blame her, anyway? There seemed to be a conflict of interest, Nancy Argento said. What was a realty company doing in the home-remodeling business, anyway?
Whenever Pilar took a difficult call like this she focused on the photo framed on her desk, the one of her and Sy with their son, Angel Greco, sitting down in front, taken just a few weeks before he died. If she’d just held on to him like in the photo, her hand on his shoulder, squeezing his bony twelve-year-old flesh. His hair had been as dark as hers, but it had a little curl in it, courtesy of his dad’s DNA.
Don’t ever let go; don’t ever let that beautiful boy leave you.
Across the office, Sy stared, his mouth open, as if to ask, Why are you still on this call with this person, this person who wants to destroy us? She wanted to scream at him, slap him:She knows, you idiot; she’s on to us!
But instead, she hung up; mid-sentence, she hung up on Nancy Argento, Desert Sun reporter. Pilar felt detached from herself as her shaking hand dropped the receiver back into its cradle; it was as if she were watching one of those old-style dramas unfold in slow motion on TV.
Just as quickly her stomach sank to her ankles. Realizing what a stupid mistake that was. How she was not cool, not calm, not collected. So glad her father, Mr. Galindez, was not there to see her being the bad businesswoman, the one whose company would be destroyed because of that lapse in judgment.
She would go to the ladies’ room, put herself together and call Nancy back. They were both professionals, after all. They’d come to an understanding.
* * *
Pilar resisted driving by the Las Palmas intersection where Angel’s skateboard had met the Range Rover. Sometimes she’d park there on her way home from Greco & Greco, if she had something to think about or if she was merely avoiding Sy. Despite the violence of what had happened, it was a quiet residential street. Maybe the boy’s essence still hovered there, his spirit. He might give her comfort, might give her an answer, even.
To pressing questions.
Like, for instance, if she should divorce Angel’s father. It was true: He preferred Connor Hurst to her, but the other truth was that she, in her own way, preferred Connor to Sy. So there they were.
She smiled, a rarity these days. She watched herself through the rear view, as much to look out for other neighborhood kids being reckless—she would scare them with the tale of the death meted out here—as to check makeup. Lipstick needed a slight touch-up. The formulas still weren’t resistant to this Palm Springs brand of insane and constant inferno.
Pilar knew her feelings were all wounded pride, and misplaced pride at that. They had a good thing going, she and Sy Greco, so intertwined at this point that even the mere thought of dividing it all up exhausted her.
No, really, the alternative she and Connor had planned for him was vastly superior to any boring no-fault California divorce.
She should get home, check on the orchids. It was their day to be tended to. She glanced at the dashboard: 114 degrees! She’d brought every pot of them inside at this time of year, but supposed one or two were forgotten in that spot in back of the pool.

Chapter One

Ray
I had just finished putting the finishing touches on my makeup when I glanced at the time. “Shit, I’m late again!” I murmured to myself as I darted out of the bathroom and into my bedroom. Liam had kept me up all night, and we were running behind. I grabbed my scrubs and quickly threw them on followed by my shoes. One down, one to go.
I then scurried toward Liam’s room, trying not to trip over all the toys that cluttered the house. I found him drawing when I entered his room. He was almost ready with his blue and white striped shirt and black jeans but no shoes. He looked up at me and smiled. “Can we go now, Mommy?”
“Yeah, baby, we can go. Grab your backpack, and pack your toys.”
He shot up from his drawing desk and hurried out of the room while I began the search for his shoes. God, there toys everywhere. It’s going to take a miracle to find these shoes. I started under his bed but had no luck. Frustrated, I started picking up his toys, searching under everything. After searching the room frantically for ten minutes, I finally found them in his toy box in the closet.
Bingo,” I yelled as I emerged from Liam’s closet with the shoes in hand, smiling from ear to ear. Liam came waltzing in a few seconds later with his backpack in hand, zipping it up and throwing it over his shoulder.
“Did you get the toys you wanted to take with you? You’re going to be gone for two days at Nanny’s,” I asked him as I ushered him to sit down so I could help him put on his shoes.
He looked up at me and made a face as if I had asked the most ridiculous question he’d ever heard. “Duh, Mom, I’m not leaving without all of my favorite toys,” he responded.
Finally leaving, we set out toward my beautiful, candy-apple-red, 1969 Ford Boss 429 Mustang. I had always had a thing for muscle cars. I loved my car almost as much as I loved my son; it was my second baby. Even though I am a woman, I could have told you a lot more about cars than most men.
Liam got in the back seat and climbed into his car seat. I pulled my seat back so I could buckle him in. The one thing I disliked about my car was the fact that it only had two doors instead of four, but I guess you had to deal with something you disliked to get what you wanted. And boy, did I want that car.
While driving down the highway that stretched for miles, my mind drifted to my mother. Why she came to mind, I couldn’t tell you, but every so often she would make an appearance in my head.
My mom had skipped out on my brothers and me a few years before, not that I complained since she was a horrible mother. She never gave a rat’s ass about us. She never physically abused us, but physical abuse was not the only way to leave scars.
Nanny practically raised the four of us. She had always favored me, because I was the baby of her grandchildren and the only girl. I had three older brothers: Michael, Matthew, and Bryan. Michael is the oldest at 36; Matt at 34; Bryan at 32; and myself at 29-almost-30.
Our dad was around till Michael turned two, but only ever came around if Mom was looking for a booty call. That was how the rest of us were born. Michael didn’t remember him. If he did, he had never talked about him before and none of us asked. We all looked alike, with blonde hair that had a slight wave to it and hazel eyes. Michael was a police officer. Matt a boxer, and Bryan a defense attorney. I was a doctor at the local hospital. I guess you could say that the lifestyles we had when we were younger played a part in our jobs. Go figure.
Mom never worried about putting food on the table for us—she was more concerned about where and how she was getting her next fix. None of us ever wanted to have to continue living like we had as children, so we shot high in our careers. I loved my job to death and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I pulled into Nanny’s driveway and hurried Liam out of the car. My shift was just about to start, and I still had to drive to the hospital. When she opened the door, Liam darted inside, nearly knocking over Nanny. She was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. She had long black hair and the warmest brown eyes that just invited you in. She had a little bit of weight to her, but she didn’t let that stop her. She wore her weight well. She had laugh lines around the corner of her eyes and the corners of her mouth, giving away her age. She was an amazing woman, and I loved her dearly.
“Thanks so much for watching Liam for me. I’ll be sure to check in on you guys as much as I can,” I said to her before making my way toward my car. She nodded and waved as I jumped in and started the engine, which of course roared. Glancing at the dashboard, I noticed that I was ten minutes late.
“Shit, shit, shit,” I mumbled to myself as I peeled out of the driveway and headed off to work. It was going to be one hell of a day, especially since I was scheduled to work all night and half a shift the next day.

INTERVIEW

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

It’s funny, cause I’m not even sure. I just woke up one day and had the entire first chapter written out in my mind. Although, I ended up scraping that chapter and starting over.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My Nanny, who was like a mother, my kids and my husband. They keep me inspired on a daily basis.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Research! I could spend HOURS researching everything that I need for my book. It’s crazy how much you need to know BEFORE you even begin to write.

What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on the third book in the Intertwined Seduction series, and a new novel that will be in an anthology, which may also be the start to another series.

Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work?

I feel like, in my opinion, that my writing grew. I reached a new level of writing in the first book versus the second.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

No matter how tough life gets, keep going. Eventually things work out for the better.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

Sometimes. If I’m distracted, then I turn on music and it helps me focus on writing.

What books have influenced your life most?

Any Kristen Ashley novel, Stephen King.

Are there any new authors that have grasp your interest?

Alex Grayson and Anna Paige

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

“The buzzing in my ear grows increasingly louder as the massive crowd screams. Bouncing on the balls of my feet, I try to ignore the noise. I need to focus. I’m back in the ring, defending my title against Tank. A large, bull-looking fighter. His name describes him perfectly.

I’m very confident in my fighting abilities. I know I could kick Tank’s ass, but I also know he could kick mine. Any great fighter knows that while is very good, so are other fighters. You should never be stupid enough to assume you are the best. Going into a fight this way will get you knocked out. I learned this lesson the hard way.”

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you so much for all of your support, though I may not show it on a daily basis, I truly appreciate it.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?

Social media. I am huge on social media and you can find me there at pretty much any time.

Do you have a special time to write? How is your day structured writing-wise?

My nights are spent writing. I have a 5 year old, 3 year old, and a newborn so at night is when I get the most peace to be able to write.

Why did you choose to write [genre] stories?

I love romance and I love suspense and mystery. It was natural for me to put them together.

What is for you the perfect book hero?

The perfect blend between a total sweetheart and an asshole. He can be too much of an asshole, but I love the quality of a little bit of assholeary.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I usually only have the first chapter planned out, and the rest is built progressively as I write.

When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing when I was about 10 years old, but at the time it was just poems. And I started writing because I was going through a lot of stuff at home, and it was a much needed outlet.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

When I published my first book, The Lucky Bullet, in 2014.

List three books you have recently read and would recommend.

Broken Ground by Anna Paige, Unveil Me by Alex Grayson, and Hold On by Kristen Ashley

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.

Lol, I can wiggle my nose like a bunny and move my ears without touching them.

Will you write more about these characters?

Mace and Ray’s story is done, but you will see more of them in other books in the Intertwined Seduction series.
